Radiation Standards and Analysis

Radiation Standards and Analysis (RSA) laboratory, Hyderabad is involved in preparation of radiation standards for Regional Physics laboratories, Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis (INAA), radiometric analysis of geological samples, alpha spectrometry and radon measurements in soil, air and water samples.

The RSA laboratory at Hyderabad is responsible for the preparation of radiometric standards for calibration of borehole logging systems, shielded-probe logging systems, core assay systems and radiometric analysis assemblies.

Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis (INAA) facility at RSA laboratory utilises a 30% HPGe detector coupled to PC-based multichannel analyser for determination of the elemental concentrations of Na, K, Ca, Sc, Cr, Fe, Co, Zn, Ga, As, Br, Rb, Ag, Sb, Cs, Ba, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Tm, Ho, Yb, Lu, Hf, Ta, W, Au, Th and U in geological samples from percentage to ultra trace levels. Irradiation of samples is carried out in DHRUVA reactor, BARC, Mumbai.

RSA laboratory is equipped with three HPGe detectors (one having 160% RE and two with 30% RE) and two NaI(Tl) detectors for radiometric analysis of geological samples from ppm to percentage levels. The laboratory also has beta gamma assemblies for determination of U3O8.

Alpha spectrometry facility is equipped with Ion Implanted Silicon Alpha Particle detector for analysis of water samples to determine the uranium activity ratio (234U/238U) using alpha spectrometry.

Radon measurement in water, soil and ambient air is being carried out in the RSA Laboratory. This laboratory has optimised the use of radon measurements in uranium exploration and environmental studies for generation of base line data.
