Atomic Minerals Data Centre

Atomic Minerals Data Centre (AMDC) has been entrusted with management of Information Technology (IT) infrastructure, IT security, website, emails and operation and maintenance of Enterprise Level Geospatial Database Management System (EGDMS) for Atomic Minerals data sets. The centre has also developed facility for Geomodelling using latest tools. The major activities of the group are as follows:

Information Technology

AMDC is instrumental in establishing IT infrastructure at Headquarters (HQ) and its connectivity with Regional Centres. Two Local Area Networks (LANs) have been established, one with secure data network and another with internet facility. AMD WAN connects HQ and its laboratories with the Regional Centres for updating and sharing of information in a secured environment using Virtual Private Network (VPN).

A multipoint high definition video conferencing system (VCS) connects HQ with seven Regional Centres and two sectional office at Thiruvananthapuram and Visakhapatnam is being used for real time interactions among scientific fraternity on a regular basis. Data encryption technique is being used for secure communication during video-conferencing. VC system has been setup to communicate between various DAE units using VSAT based connectivity. HQ is also connected with other DAE units through National Knowledge Network (NKN) grid.

Website Design & Management

AMD’s website is CMS based and as per guidelines for Indian Government Websites (GIGW) compliance is hosted on National Informatics Centre (NIC) server. AMDC maintains and updates the website content on a regular basis. AMDC in coordination with NIC manages official email accounts of AMD employees.

Database Development

AMD generates a wide variety of technical and scientific data as part of its survey and exploration for atomic minerals. A modest beginning was made in 1990’s with development of Geoscience Database in Paradox in standalone mode and deployed at all Regional Centres for data population.

Presently, AMD implemented an Enterprise Level Geospatial Database Management System (EGDMS) deployed on secured LAN which consists of two parts- a central database management system for storage and management of data and a client web-based interface to allow officials to access, upload and interact with data. The geoscientific data generated each year are stored in the spatial database and can be viewed on the base map of the country. Provision for migrating of legacy maps along with their specially designed meta-data and digital data available in different formats has been made. This novel data management system will help in rapid accessing of vital information and augment the exploration activity of the department.

Geomodelling

The visualization of geological features and ore bodies in 3-D helps in understanding the spatial controls, distribution of mineralisation in a geological system, distribution and estimation of block grades using various algorithms for recovering metals of interest. For data modelling and geospatial analysis, latest software packages are being utilised, at AMD headquarters and regional centres through network-based license sharing software facility.
