National Science Day - 2022 celebrations in AMD

 

Atomic Minerals Directorate for Exploration and Research (AMD), Hyderabad, a constituent unit of Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), celebrated the National Science Day – 2022 on the theme ‘Integrated approach in science and technology for a sustainable future’ on 28.02.2022. On this occasion, students and faculty members of various educational institutions visited the laboratories and geological museum in the Headquarters, Hyderabad; seven Regional Centres in New Delhi, Bengaluru, Jamshedpur, Shillong, Jaipur, Nagpur and Hyderabad besides two Sectional Offices at Visakhapatnam and Thiruvananthapuram. The main function was held in Dr. Homi J. Bhabha Auditorium in the premises of AMD Headquarters, Hyderabad, which was webcast in the virtual platform and YouTube. Several dignitaries, including the Chief Guest Prof. P. Appa Rao, Former Vice Chancellor, University of Hyderabad; Dr. D.K. Sinha, Director, AMD; Additional Directors, AMD Shri B. Saravanan, Dr. T.S. Sunil Kumar and Shri R. Mamallan and Dr. T. Sreenivas, Head, Mineral Processing Division, BARC graced the occasion with their physical presence. A large number of participants, including serving and retired officers and staff of AMD, students and faculty from various educational institutions joined the proceedings from various parts of the country through virtual mode. Besides, senior officials of AMD, students and faculty from 13 schools and colleges in Hyderabad were present in the audience. Shri R. Mamallan delivered the welcome address. Dr. D.K Sinha, speaking on the occasion, highlighted the need to overcome the negative impacts of unmanageable development like pollution and climate change. Thereafter, the names of the top five participants in the All India Essay and Quiz competitions conducted online on 8th and 21st December, 2021 as part of ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ celebrations in AMD, were announced. A total of 1,400 students from 102 schools participated in the Essay competition, while 3,100 students from 98 schools took part in the Quiz competition, which were held under four categories from Class VI - Post-graduate level. Subsequently, the Chief Guest Prof. P. Appa Rao, delivered the Invited Talk on ‘Microbes and sustainable agriculture’. Prof. Rao emphasised the importance of microbiome in plant and human health and thereby its significance in sustainable agriculture and the ecosystem. The programme concluded with the rendering of national anthem.
